Here you are, putting together what you hope to be a memorable event for your guests. Maybe you’ve hired designers, caterers, planners, maybe you’re doing it all on your own. Colors, patterns, and themes have been considered, pondered, even mauled over, guests lists and possible table assignments have been cross-checked and vetted by a psychological professional (remember last time when _____ and _____ sat at the same table?). You have researched venues, decor, menus... but have you considered what sounds will you use? Music, of course, brings the proverbial noise. In all its glorious forms, music is a great contributor, providing emotional glue. Imagine your favorite movies, and then imagine them without the soundtrack... what utter heresy!

Introducing the string quartet. If you want music as part of a dinner, hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, or ceremony, one of the best options is to hire a string quartet (2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello). This combination of instruments provides great flexibility and versatility, able to perform most styles of music, and in a wide variety of settings. A string quartet produces a full sound, yet is not so dominant as to make holding conversations difficult. It can also be quiet enough to set an intimate mood. Add to this that there is something viscerally satisfying in watching a group of musicians working and communicating with each other. There is the pleasure of the music itself, plus the enjoyment of seeing it happen in real time, giving a string quartet an elegance that is difficult to replicate. There is also a hidden secret to having a string quartet play at your event, it’s a wonderful conversation starter. One of the most rewarding things for me as a musician is when guests initiate conversations about their experiences with music with me, and with others.

WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE A STRING QUARTET:

  • it provides a wide variety of music

  • it can perform indoors and outdoors, with little to no amplification necessary

  • many people prefer seeing live musicians perform over having a DJ or no music

  • it can be a great conversation starter for attendees
