I am often asked if event musicians should be tipped. The short answer is no… but… they do greatly appreciate it. A good rule of thumb if you wish to show you appreciation is to tip $15-$25 per musician per hour of service, but you should never feel obligated.
OTHER WAYS TO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION
POSITIVE REVIEWS:
A positive review on Google, Yelp, or similar sites is always welcomed, especially since musicians are generally small business owners or entrepreneurs.
If they have a social media presence, follow and review them on those platforms.
Sending a handwritten note or email expressing your appreciation that can be added to a musician’s website and/or social media.
REFERRALS:
Much like positive reviews, referrals are greatly appreciated. If you know of friends, family, or colleagues looking for live music, let them know how happy you are with the service you received.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE:
Different types of event vendors may or may not expect tips, check for what is standard in your local market. If you’ve hired a planner, have them check for you. Also, feel free to ask the vendor directly.
Some vendors may include fees in their cost that equate to tips. If you’ve hired a planner, have them check for you. Also, feel free to ask the vendor directly.
The cost of tipping vendors can add up quite quickly. Be sure to include these costs in your budget.
Have a plan for tip delivery in place:
a designated person such as a planner, a trusted guest/associate, or even yourself to deliver tips
tips should be delivered at the end of the vendor’s service
